The Carroll REC offers 2–3 American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Classes each year. These courses are typically offered in a blended learning format, which includes:
7 hours of online coursework to be completed prior to the first in-person session 21.5 hours of in-person training
Class Requirements:
Age: Participants must be at least 15 years old by the first day of class.
Class Size: Minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants per session.
Pre-Course Swim Test: All participants must successfully complete a swim skills assessment prior to enrollment.

Pre-Course Swim Test
Part 1: Swim–Tread–Swim
Swim 150 yards continuously using freestyle or breaststroke (face must remain in the water; goggles allowed)
Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs
Swim an additional 50 yards using freestyle or breaststroke (face must remain in the water)
Part 2: Timed Event
Complete within 1 minute and 40 seconds (goggles not allowed)
Swim 20 yards
Surface dive to retrieve a 10-lb object from a depth of 7–10 feet
Return to the surface and swim back 20 yards on your back, holding the object above the water
Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps
